Imagine staring up a flight of stairs and dreading trying to make it to the top.\u00a0 That’s what life was like for John Shimkus.\u00a0 His years as a high school and college athlete plus decades of bowling, golf and living a very active life with kids and grandkids had taken a toll on John’s knee. The cartilage in his knee had worn away leaving bone scraping bone every time John took a step.<\/p>\n

“I jokingly said to my co-workers if there was a fire in the building, how would I get out,” said John. “But, in reality, it wasn’t a joke.”<\/p>\n

The ATI Foundation is hosting the 2nd Annual\u00a0Metal Walk<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0June 8 to salute patients, like John, who decided to get their life back by undergoing a joint replacement. The Metal Walk – which will begin and end at the Harrah’s Casino parking lot in Joliet, IL – also honors the doctors, physical therapists, family and friends who will walk the 1K or 3K to support joint replacement patients.<\/p>\n
