{"id":1273,"date":"2012-10-04T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-10-04T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ati.local\/?p=1273"},"modified":"2024-12-17T17:33:20","modified_gmt":"2024-12-17T17:33:20","slug":"treatment-for-back-pain-should-include-physical-therapy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.atipt.com\/treatment-for-back-pain-should-include-physical-therapy\/","title":{"rendered":"Treatment for Back Pain Should Include Physical Therapy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A study released this week in\u00a0<em>JAMA Internal Medicine<\/em>\u00a0raised concerns about overly aggressive treatments being prescribed to patients with back pain.<\/p>\n<p>The use of narcotic drugs, referrals to specialty physicians and diagnostic tests have been on the rise since 1999 in the treatment of back pain \u2013 one of the most common reasons Americans visit the doctor.<\/p>\n<p>On the contrary, the use of more conservative treatments recommended in national guidelines from the American College of Physicians, which includes the use of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atipt.com\/node\/21\">physical therapy<\/a>, remained the same or decreased.<\/p>\n<p>The study highlights the need for the use of conservative treatments with back pain patients, and that in the majority of cases, these treatments are successful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhysical therapy management of back pain offers a treatment that medicine alone doesn\u2019t compare to,\u201d says Dave Griffiths, physical therapist at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atipt.com\/node\/964\">ATI\u2019s Oswego\u00a0<\/a>clinic. \u201cAs physical therapists, we have the luxury of helping patients eliminate pain, and the ability to teach them how to avoid future pain without the use of drugs, injections, or other surgical procedures.\u00a0 Our biggest challenge is that we live in a quick fix society and we all want the easy answer.
