{"id":2076,"date":"2019-07-10T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-07-10T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/live-ati-pt-2025.pantheonsite.io\/?p=2076"},"modified":"2024-12-17T17:34:17","modified_gmt":"2024-12-17T17:34:17","slug":"concussion-when-do-i-pull-my-athlete","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.atipt.com\/concussion-when-do-i-pull-my-athlete\/","title":{"rendered":"Concussion: When Do I Pull My Athlete?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Concussions continue to be a hot topic on the sidelines and in the news, especially now that we are in the thick of football season.\u00a0 And while there has been much advancement in the diagnosis and treatment of traumatic brain injuries, knowing when to pull an athlete out of the game isn\u2019t always an exact science.<\/p>\n<p>Because the sideline diagnosis of a concussion can be tricky &#8211; and we often rely on the \u201ctruth\u201d from a player on how he or she actually feels \u2013 coaches and parents need to be diligent in how they handle situations when a blow, or a jarring of an athlete&#8217;s head, looks suspicious.<\/p>\n<p>Eric Buck, Certified Athletic Trainer and Sports Medicine Supervisor with ATI Physical Therapy, has spent many years on the sidelines treating athletes of all ages, and from all areas of sports.\u00a0 Eric offers these tips and guidelines that may help answer the question \u201cWhen do I pull my athlete?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEarly recognition that something may be wrong is essential.\u00a0 No matter how hard the impact, any trauma to the head or neck can be a cause for a potential concussion, and it\u2019s important to immediately assess a player\u2019s safety,\u201d says Eric.\u00a0 \u201cSimply ask questions, observe for visible symptoms and promote honesty and trust.\u00a0 Often, your athlete just won\u2019t look or feel right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eric stresses the importance of\u00a0<strong>removing the athlete immediately once a symptom is reported or observed<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>and then seeking advice from a medical healthcare professional licensed to evaluate concussions<\/strong>. \u201cYou know your kids better than anyone, and you will know if they aren\u2019t acting normal.\u00a0 If you are unsure if they are symptomatic, use caution and remove from the activity.\u00a0 When in doubt, pull them out!\u00a0 Never anticipate a resolution of symptoms.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Concussion Facts<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>A concussion is considered a brain injury.<\/li>\n<li>A concussion can occur with or without loss of consciousness.<\/li>\n<li>Younger athletes experience greater severity, and can take longer to recuperate.<\/li>\n<li>There is no such thing as a mild concussion.<\/li>\n<li>A concussion can occur with or without a hit to the head.\u00a0 A sudden jarring can be just as traumatic.<\/li>\n<li>After one concussion, an athlete is 1 \u2013 2 times more likely to receive a second one.<\/li>\n<li>It is not normal for an athlete to \u201chave their bell rung.\u201d\u00a0 Removal from play should always occur following this symptom.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Concussion Symptoms<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>These symptoms\u00a0<strong>may or may not be immediately noticeable<\/strong>, but may include the following, individually or in combination thereof:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Appearing dazed, stunned or confused<\/li>\n<li>Answers questions slowly<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty thinking clearly or loss of memory<\/li>\n<li>Feeling sluggish, hazy, or groggy<\/li>\n<li>Headache or blurry vision<\/li>\n<li>Nausea or vomiting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>CONCUSSION! Now What?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cConcussion-like symptoms are numerous.\u00a0 Instead of listing the symptoms, I tell parents to ask what feels abnormal, note any out of the ordinary appearances and monitor these symptoms throughout the day.\u00a0 Be sure to schedule an evaluation with an athletic trainer or a physician licensed to practice medicine whom is proficient in concussion care,\u201d says Eric. \u201cThese healthcare professionals will perform a thorough assessment and develop a plan of care and recovery to safely return to sports.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A trip to the emergency room is never a wrong choice, but most concussions can be treated conservatively. However, if an athlete experiences the following symptoms, take them to the emergency room immediately!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Symptoms rapidly worsen in severity<\/li>\n<li>Loss of consciousness or \u201cblacking out\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Vomiting<\/li>\n<li>Slurred speech, or unequal pupil dilation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Following diagnosis, remember COMPLETE REST is the true remedy.\u00a0 Treat a concussion by resting the brain from all stimulating activity, including sports, television, video games and texting.\u00a0 Also, take away the athlete\u2019s phone to remove temptation.<\/p>\n<p>There is no need to continually wake from sleep.\u00a0 Be sure the athlete is comfortable, maintain hydration and a normal diet.\u00a0 Avoid additional exertion or stressful activity until symptom-free.
